The Fuss According to Huss:

Things & Stuff

by Mike Huss

January 1,1998

As we approach the race to the malls, rock around the Christmas Tree and welcome the dawn of 1998, let's grab a cup of holiday cheer and review as to where we have been and where we are going with our latest edition of "THINGS & STUFF".

OK, let me make sure my numbers are correct: in the first year in St. Louis, the Rams won seven games.

In their second year, they won six games.

We know that in 1997, they will win no more than five games.

I see a pattern here.

At least we know the headsets aren't totally to blame.

I wonder what Frank Gansz has been telling Jeff Wilkins this month.

Third down back and reserve running back Amp Lee was selected as the RAms' MPV. Doesn't that say it all?

So much for my 6-10 prediction for the Rams.

Is it just me, or does this Rams/Bears rivalry not have the same zest as the Cardinals-Cubs or Blues-Blackhawks?

Food for though: perhaps Brian Cox would be good for the Rams.

Perhaps the Rams would be good for Brian Cox.

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has to be smiling. Parity reigns supreme. 80% of the NFL West and 80% of the NFL East have losing records.

The Commish is also smiling as both the Rams and the Cowboys will not be invited to the playoffs this year.

Within a 3-12 record, the Arizona Cardinals may get the #1 pick in the NFL draft. Perhaps they will select Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Isn't it a relief that we all survived the return of Mike Keenan to St. Louis?? Iron Mike should get a commission from the Blues, though; he was responsible for selling a couple of thousand tickets for a Monday night game in December.

Here's a wish for a speedy recovery for Blues defenseman Al MacInnis. This guy is a class act. Despite all the chaos that has gone around him over the past years, he simply plays hockey and keeps his mouth shut. Mr. Pleau, please lock him up to a contract.

I like Brett Hull much better now that it is not the director of personnel for the Blues and the US Olympic hockey team.

Food for though: Curtis Joseph will be a free agent at the end of this hockey season. Grant Fuhr's contract will expire with the Blues at the same time.

I enjoy listening to Dan Kelly's play-by-play on Blues broadcasts.

Doug Wickenheiser: you are in our prayers.

Andy Benes will be a member of the Cardinals when they take the field against the Dodgers on March 31 (weather permitting of course). Since the major league baseball Players Association is in favor of this contract, it will fly. As we all know, the MLBPA runs the game. Benes only needs the okey-dokey of Commissioner Donald Fehr.

On the other hand, if Latrell Sprewell was a power hitting outfielder, he would be receiving his salary while serving his suspension.

With all this added salary, Benes, Mark McGwire, Delino DeShields, Todd Stottlemyre: is there another investor on the horizon? Or, could one of the high-priced veterans be dealt (Royce Clayton??).

Is it just me, or is the Cardinals relief pitching status cause for concern??

Aside from Pedro Martinez and his immediate family, both Randy Johnson and Mo Vaughn have to be smiling.

How do you like that? The Heisman voters got it right.

Congratulations to the St. Louis Ambush, the best-kept sports secret in town. They're 10-2 at this wring and playing at the top of their game. Perhaps the most unsung and under-appreciated person in our sports community is Darryl Doran.

It's too bad that Charlie Spoonhour can not recruit.

Thank you Keith Pickett and all the schools and kids who played in the KMOX/Coca-Cola Shootout. You made taking a day off work very enjoyable.

How have things changed over the past 12 months: Mizzou is now back in the football business and the college basketball game of choice for December in the GAteway City is Illinois vs. SLU.

And finally...

Raiders' QB Jeff George is known for not being able to play nicely with his teammates and coaches. The Colts and the Falcons have sent the former Illini QB packing.

But QB Jeff indicated that he feels athletes have a very important duty in serving as a role model for youth and that family values and life are vital in today's world.

Unfortunately, he made these politically correct remarks in a recent edition of PENTHOUSE magazine.

Oh, for the record--I secured this tidbit from the USA Today. I mention this in order to avoid any confusion that I purchased the above-mentioned mag for research purposes!
