Fact: Going into the 1998 draft, the St. Louis Rams have done little to improve their talent base, while the San Francisco 49ers continue to get better and better.
Opinion: In the absence of any significant additions between now and the start of the season, the Rams are doomed to repeat last year's 6-10 won-loss record.
Question: What was Bud Wilkinson's record in the second year at the helm of the Big Red?
Fact: SLU's Larry Hughes, after a high-quality freshman season during which he gave the nation a glimpse of his basketball potential, is but one simple phone call away from becoming an NBA multi-millionaire.
Opinion: Unless Hughes (a) feels that the health of his younger brother demands that he remain in St. Louis; and (b) genuinely enjoys the academic side of life at SLU, he would be a fool to remain in school for his sophomore year.
Question: Why is it so hard for people to understand that, if Hughes' profession is ready to call now, that it is incumbent on him to answer that call?
Fact: Contract negotiations between the Blues' management team and representatives for Brett Hull and Al MacInnis have broken down, and both players are apparently headed for the NHL's off-season free agent marketplace.
Opinion: Hull and MacInnis are the two best players on the Blues' roster.
Question: Isn't it practically unthinkable that the Blues would put themselves in the position of losing their two best players, while obtaining virtually nothing in return?
Fact: Donovan Osborne may very well start out the 1998 regular season, his seventh as a big-leaguer, on the disabled list, making it six years in a row that he will have missed all or part of a regular season due to injury.
Opinion: In light of workhorse starter Andy Benes' disappearance to Arizona, Osborne's return to his 1996 form (13-9 ; 3.53. ERA in 30 starts) is an essential piece of the Cardinals' 1998 pitching puzzle.
Question: What do you suppose the Las Vegas over-and-under line is as far as Donovan Osborne's 1998 victory totals is concerned?
