Home run king Mark McGwire...is he slipping?! Recall that McGwire is the only player in big league history to hit more homers than singles in a single season (with more than 100 games played). In fact, Mac has done it twice--in 1995 and in 1998. Indeed, for the four seasons beginning in 1995 (and continuing through the record-breaking '98 campaign), Mac clubbed 219 HRs while hitting only 218 singles. McGwire's 1998 HR/1B totals are astounding--70 HRs and 61 singles. Think about that for a minute or three--more homers than singles. Spring training 1999 has come and gone. While no one would quibble with Mac's spring power production (9 HRs)...he's "tarnished" those long ball figures by slapping an even dozen singles. We'll post Big Mac's HR/1B totals ("Bunts & Keepers") throughout the season... |
