With apologies to our readers in the Boston area, Wrigley Field is probably the best place in the world to watch a major league baseball game...with Fenway Pahhhhk a close second. But Wrigley and Fenway have (at least) two things in common. For one thing, both are more-or-less impossible to get to by car. But once you arrive, you never want to leave. Part of the reason for the appeal of the neighborhood ballparks has to do with just that--they're neighborhood ballparks. And big-city neighborhoods have, on alternating corners, churches and taverns. Wrigleyville is no different...except that the "church" is a baseball diamond... One of Wrigleyville's favorite pre- and post- game spots is Murphy's...which borders Wrigley Field. Players and coaches have been known to congregate at Murphy's after a long day under Wrigley's hot sun. In light of yesterday's ninth-inning bulllpen catastrophe, you s'pose Dave Duncan and his beleaguered staff of relievers were among the revelers? |
