Two New Faces

Joe McEwing

The surprise of the Cardinals '99 spring campaign, Joe McEwing's versatility, combined with his offensive production and overall energy level, is making the roster decisions for Cardinals manager Tony La Russa quite difficult.

In particular, since the Cardinals plan to carry twelve pitchers, McEwing's ability to play the OF looms large.

Shawon Dunston

Shawon Dunston in red?

When will the first Shawon-o-Meter appear in Busch Stadium this summer?

Like Joe McEwing, Dunston's versatility is of paramount importance to the early-season edition of the 1999 Cardinals. As this is written, Dunston is the only "regular" back-up to 1B Mark McGwire on the major-league roster.

Except Willie McGee, perhaps.

One thing appears obvious, though.

Dunston has taken care of his body...and if his back holds up, the long-time ex-Cub may get as many as 300 at-bats in a Cardinal uniform this year.
